The second annual Ava Dallas’s Don’t Shake the Baby virtual 5k.

Welcome to the second annual 5k in honor of Ava Dallas Phillips. Ava Dallas along with her twin, Mya Lynn were born on January 6th, 2011. Unfortunately due to complications associated with being repeatedly shaken as a young infant Ava Dallas died on March 12th, 2018, at just 7 years old. This 5k is going to be held yearly from their date of birth (January 6th) until the day Ava Dallas passed (March 12th) to raise awareness and education to hopefully prevent more cases of child abuse in the form of shaken baby syndrome aka abusive head trauma.
This is the direct link to register for the 5k. All who register will receive a medal and it will be shipped to your address on your registration. Total cost is $33. $30 for the 5k itself and the $3 charge for the registration.
Please consider this run, not only for Ava, but also for the multitude of infants who have suffered or are still suffering from this needless abuse.https://runsignup.com/Race/PA/Scranton/AvaDallassDontShaketheBaby5k?fbclid=IwAR2q8xi6IGV3FA-6IZ938vnX7zwXMWSGeElblngKx75HruoGKaTpFT9YtuM

Baby hats for awareness.

We are in the process of setting up another campaign for education and awareness. This is for newborns and their parents. The newborn will receive a handmade hat to protect their fragile heads and the parents will receive information on what Shaken Baby Syndrome is and how to prevent it. We feel that this will be a win. Who doesn’t like gifts for their newborn?

We have many volunteers working on this. From people making and donating hats, to high school girls spreading the word and even running yarn drives to collect yarn for the hats! Once we have a notable supply of hats, we will package each hat with a educational information. This to will be done by volunteers. Then it is on to the last step. This is to distribute them to maternity hospitals for them to give to the new baby and their parents. If anyone would like to help send us a message. You can help by donating or even giving us a contact at a hospital you feel would love to help support this campaign. As of right now we are looking to do this in the month of April which is child abuse awareness month.

Awareness on Shaken Baby Syndrome presentation.

On April 4, 2019 at 7:30 in the morning we held our first lecture using our new “baby”. This was done via Skype to a class in Haverhills, MA. We used a power point presentation along with the baby to talk to a group of teenagers on what Shaken Baby Syndrome was and how to prevent it. We held a question and answer session afterward. The presentation was well received and afterwards we will thrilled to receive thank you notes not only from the teacher, but all of the students in attendance.

If anyone is interested in having us do one of these presentations, please contact us either by email or phone.

Simulated Baby Doll

Ava Dallas’s Don’t Shake the Baby 5k..

We wrapped up the first Ava Dallas’s Don’t Shake the Baby 5k on March 12. We would like to thank everyone who joined us in honoring Ava. A special Thank You to Ryan Collins who donated his time and talent to setting up the run and managing it for us. Also Karen MacDonald (who ran for Ava because she couldn’t) and DeeDee McCaslin (who loved Ava like family) who helped us to design the medal. The proceeds from this race were used to purchase a simulated head trauma baby doll for us to teach classes on the dangers of Shaken Baby Syndrome. We also purchased other educational materials. We hope everyone had a good time and will join us again next year.

On January 6, 2011 Ava Dallas and Mya Lynn were born. In February of 2011 Ava Dallas became a victim of Shaken Baby Syndrome. She suffered many injuries and became permanently disabled. On March 12, 2018 she died from those injuries. In her honor we have decide to hold the “Ava Dallas’s Don’t Shake the Baby 5K.” The proceeds from this race will go to the nonprofit Stop Shaken Baby Syndrome and to help educate the public about this horrific form of child abuse. While I am not naïve enough to think we can put a stop to child abuse, I hope that we can lower the numbers of victims and help those who are affected. Ava’s twin sister Mya feels that people don’t care that children are being hurt. Please help me show her that people do care. Not only was Ava’s life taken, so was Mya’s innocence. She lived every day with the effects and will continue to do so. Today she must celebrate her birthday without her twin by her side. Together we can help put an end to this.
